Fully financed research year on Covid-19, hyperglycemia, and diagnosis of type 2 diabetes

Background:

Early on in the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, health care professionals included dexamethasone (either orally or intravenously) as standard treatment of Corona Virus Disease (COVID) 19 to better outcome in hospitalized individuals. It is well known that dexamethasone and other corticosteroids have the potential to increase blood glucose (BG) levels by various mechanisms. In addition to the effects attributed to corticosteroids, acute SARS-CoV-2 infection raise the levels of inflammatory cytokines, which further induce insulin resistance and hyperglycemia. The above-mentioned mechanisms may especially concern the hospital-admitted COVID-19 population, where patients of high age, patients with obesity, and patients with diabetes typically is overrepresented. In this retrospective cohort study on >600 patients with covid-19 admitted to Regional Hospital West Jutland Hospital (2020-2022), we aim to investigate the association of Covid-19 including the treatment with dexamethasone to the risk of hyperglycemia, complications, and a later diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

We can offer:

A fully financed research year (fall semester 2023) with two dynamic supervisors. Main supervisor Steffen Leth, MD, PhD, associate professor, Department of Internal Medicine, Regional Hospital West Jutland and co-supervisor Lene Ring Madsen , MD, PhD, Department of Internal Medicine, Regional Hospital West Jutland and Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus, Aarhus University Hospital (Both an office at Regional Hospital West and Aarhus University Hospital is an option).

A very interesting field of research in the intersection between infectious diseases and endocrinology. You will work with clinical data, learn statistical analysis, present data, and be the first author on the expected publication.

You are:

  • A candidate student within the field of medicine.
  • Able to work independently and interested in trying something else than following the syllabus.
  • Keen to learn statistical analysis and to interpret and present data both orally and in writing.
